The Stocks Exchange in India: BSE and NSE
Most of the trading in India’s stock market takes place on its two stock exchanges: namely the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The BSE has been in existence since 1875. The NSE, on the other hand, was founded in 1992 and started trading in 1994. The BSE had about 4,700 listed companies, whereas the NSE had about 1,200. Out of all the listed companies on the BSE, only about 500 companies constitute more than 90% of its market capitalization; the rest of the crowd consists of highly illiquid (low activities) shares/stocks.
However, both exchanges follow the same trading mechanism, trading hours, settlement process, etc. as strict procedure set by SEBI’s guideline.
What is Stock/Share?
Stock/share is a unit of ownership in a company. Buying a share means you own a small (…%) of that company. The total numbers of shares are decided by the owners/promoters of the company as per the total asset’s value during the launching of an initial public offer (IPO).
A stock/share may be bought or sold only if it is listed on the exchanges through NSE/BSE in India without a physical meeting of buyers and sellers.
If the company’s profit increases, the share value also increases.
Example; if you were bought the shares of Reliance Industries Ltd. in 2018 @Rs.920 per share. Today, Reliance Industries’s share value is Rs.1500 as of March 2020. You have a profit of Rs.580/- per share or 63% in within 2 years.
